Dr. Jim Guldin

JAMES M. GULDIN is a Research Ecologist and Project Leader with the Southern Research Station of the USDA Forest Service in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He supervises two southern pine research units consisting of 10 scientists and 20 support personnel at seven locations across the South. Jim describes himself as an "alleged" expert in management of native southern pines, in the application of uneven-aged silviculture to southern pines, and in silvicultural approaches to restoration of southern pines-especially shortleaf pine in the Ouachita and Ozark Mountains, and longleaf pine on the lower Gulf Coastal Plain.

He's a member of the Southern Station's "triple-triple" club; he's provided more than 100 presentations, published more than 100 research papers, and led more than 100 field tours for regional, national, and international audiences. He's an active member of the Society of American Foresters, the IUFRO 1.05.00 Uneven-aged Silviculture Working Group, the Science Advisory Council for the Pioneer Forest/L-A-D Foundation, the Longleaf Partnership Council, and the USFS Experimental Forests and Ranges Working Group.

Dr. David Bengston

DAVID BENGSTON is a Social Scientist and Environmental Futurist with the US Forest Service, Northern Research Station, St. Paul, Minnesota. He works in a new Futures research unit titled the "Strategic Foresight and Rapid Response Group." He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Forest Resources and the Conservation Biology Graduate Program at the University of Minnesota.

Dave is the author of more than 120 research publications on a wide range of topics related to people and their environments. The current focus of his research is environmental futures. He is the Chair of the North American Forest Commission's Futures Working Group and is a member of World Future Society and the Association of Professional Futurists.
