Database preparation
You were given a stand map shapefile for the Target Management Unit and you
created a plot location shapefile earlier in the semester.
- Add fields to the plot shapefile for average diameter, plot basal area per
acre, plot volume per acre, stand site index and trees per acre.
- Add field to the stand shapefile for average stand diameter, stand average
basal area per acre, average stand volume per acre, stand site index and
average stand trees per acre.
Your project
You must choose a query of the database the answers a relevant forest
management question. Examples include:
- If 100' riparian buffers were implemented at the Baskett Wildlife area what would the the tree volume in those buffers?
- What are the real trees size characteristics in the aerial photographic classes setup earlier in the class.
- If slopes over 35% can not be accessed by ground based equipment. How much volume reamind on slopes less than 35%?
- Ranks stands in the management unit by likely need for thinning using tree per acre, basal area and average diameter.
These are a few examples only, please use your own interests and creativity to
develop your management question.
Once the question is set develop a ArcView Project to illustrate your result. Create a complete layout of that project and write a 5 page or less report that explains your question and how you did your analysis and what was the result.
At the final time, you will be expected to turn your report with the layout, and be able to give a 5-minute presentation on your question and the result to the class. The presenation and the report are graded.
