Rubric for Forest Information Systems
Topics Concepts Skills
Mapping
Projections and Datum Present evidence of an understanding of the key aspects of projections and datum Demonstrate the use of correct projection systems for the context
Coordinate systems Present evidence of an understanding of the key aspects of coordinates systems Properly use two coordinate systems
Contours Present evidence of an understanding of the idea of representing 3-dimensional information in 2 dimensions Demonstrate the use of contours to determine elevation difference.
Stereoscopic vision Present evidence of an understanding of the principles that allow stereoscopic vision from aerial photographs Demonstrate the use of stereoscopic vision for the interpretation of aerial photographs
Scale Present evidence of an understanding of the factors that effect scale and their interaction. Correctly calculate scale of a photograph and a map  of unknown scale
Sampling and Inventory
General Photo Interpretation Present evidence the you know the various elements that allow a aerial photo interpreter to distinguish features in photographic images Demonstrate the ability to distinguish various features in aerial photographs
Photo Interpretation of type, size, density Present evidence that you understand the factors used by aerial photo interpreters to distinguish forest type, size, and density. Demonstrate the interpretation of aerial photographs for type, size, and density on the assigned study area.
Photo Sampling Present evidence that you understand the principles of aerial photograph sampling Demonstrate the ability to layout and implement an aerial photo sample.
Forest Inventory Present evidence that you understand the principles of forest sampling Demonstrate the ability to layout and implement an forest sample.
Data Analysis
Arcview Present evidence that you understand the reasons we use database software in these type of problems. Demonstrate the ability to effectively use ArcView and Excel to edit, manipulate and present data
Database construction Present evidence that you understand the steps of database constructions and the reasons for the sequence of steps in the construction Demonstrate the construction of a spatial database for the given study area.
Data quality evaluation Present evidence that you understand the sources of errors and the methods for detecting and correcting these errors. Demonstrate an evaluation of your work in the constructed database.
Data query Present evidence that you understand how to query databases to obtain information relevant to management questions. Demonstrate the use of your database by a non-trivial query analysis.
